Top 20 Celebrity Dresses at the 2012 Oscars

The red carpet at the 2012 Oscars was sea of decadent dresses, from Gwyneth Paltrow's multi-functional caped perfection to Cameron Diaz's fitted gold number. White, red and black ruled the evening's color palette and there were enough waist-defining details to prove the statement middle is having a moment, but plenty of ladies stood out in their own right. Here, we choose the 20 best celebrity dresses looks of the evening.

20) Virginia Madsen
Virginia Madsen was one of the only attendees to wear majestic purple, contrasting the startling hue with oversized emerald earrings (feeling the Angelina Jolie influence, anyone?) and a curly updo.
19)Glenn Close in Zac Posen
Damages star Glenn Close looked like she meant business in her forest green Zac Posen gown and its matching tailored blazer. The mermaid silhouette may be getting a little tired, but we applaud Glenn's expert working of the gown's fitted bustier. Nice pose!
18)Kelly Ripa in Carolina Herrera
Kelly Ripa's skin was so dewy and glowing, she looked as if she'd slipped straight off the tennis courts and into her pale mint Carolina Herrera gown. Art deco Fred Leighton jewels and a glittering onyx clutch played off the dress' eye-catching black leather piping.
17)Kristen Wiig in J.Mendel
Kristen Wiig loves wearing flesh tones on the red carpet and the Oscars were no exception. She added a touch of dramatic contrast to her tiered nude J. Mendel gown with a dark manicure, although her highlighted waves were beachy, California beautiful.
16)Sarah Hyland in Alberta Ferretti
Modern Family star Sarah Hyland looked oh-so-innocent in her demure dusky lavender Alberta Ferretti gown, which featured a gathered bodice and asymmetrical straps. The young actress matched the romance of the dress with a loose, low bun and bronze eye makeup.
15)Nina Garcia in Jean-Paul Gaultier
Nina Garcia's stately black Jean-Paul Gaultier gown fit right in on the Oscars red carpet, although it would have looked more elegant paired with a sleeker hairstyle. We get it, chunky highlights are in, but my, are they distracting! Vintage Fred Leighton jewels completed the look.
14)Missi Pyle in Valentina Delfino
Missi Pyle of The Artist wore a very special gown indeed—and for a good cause. Pyle's hand-dyed organic silk gown was Valentina Delfino's winning submission in the Red Carpet Green Dress competition, which aims to promote eco-friendly elegance. Missi added shine to the off-the-shoulder dress with stately Chopard diamonds.
13)Sandra Bullock in Marchesa
We understand the elegance Sandra Bullock saw in this black-and-white Marchesa gown, but she would have done better avoiding dresses with beading that clutters up her midsection in a truly unflattering fashion.
12)Penelope Cruz in Armani Prive
Penelope Cruz brought real romance to the Hollywood & Highland center in a flowing periwinkle creation by Armani Privé. Cruz added classic Grace Kelly polish to her ensemble with diamond jewels and shiny 1950s-inspired curls.
11)Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab
Milla Jovovich was an early red carpet favorite in a one-shoulder Elie Saab Couture gown paired with classic red lips, artfully arranged curls, and the very daintiest box clutch. It's hard to execute "va-va-voom" with such elegance.
10)Michelle Williams in Louis Vutton
Michelle Williams was heartbreakingly dainty in a classic coral peplum gown by Louis Vuitton. Michelle added a dash of her highly feminine personal style with a jeweled bow detail at the waist and a girly pale pink clutch.
9)Maria Menounos in Maria Lucia Hohan
Maria Menounos played it dreamy in a minty Maria Lucia Hohan gown, worn with Jacob & Co. diamonds and a romantic loose bun. The lovely television personality showed a hint of unexpected skin with a flirty peek-a-boo bodice.
8)Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture
The Descendants'  Shailene Woodley is not yet old enough to drink legally in the United States, but she looked uncomfortably mature in her futuristic white Valentino Couture gown with its perforated bust.
7)Stacy Keibler in Marchesa
George Clooney's lady love Stacy Keibler very much resembled a trophy in her expertly draped gold Marchesa gown. With a deep side part and sun-kissed skin, Stacy couldn't have looked any more polished on her boyfriend's big night.
6)Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad
The beaded stripes in Jennifer Lopez's figure-hugging Zuhair Murad gown augmented her famously curvy silhouette. She pumped up the sex appeal with a sleek, tight bun (instant facelift!), luxurious diamond earrings, and patented ultra-serious sexyface.
5)Natalie Portman in Christian Dior Haute Couture
Last year's Best Actress winner Natalie Portman continued her long-running streak of perfection in vintage Christian Dior Haute Couture. This strapless crimson gown was featured in the 1954 collection, but it couldn't look any fresher than it does on Natalie.
4)Cameron Diaz in Gucci
Cameron Diaz sizzled in a nude Gucci gown with gold beading and cascading ruffles, but her simple diamond necklace failed to add the polish that her breezy, casually-styled blonde bob detracted from the look. Her partner in glam, Gwyneth Paltrow, should have recommended some creative ways to work that short hair.
3)Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
Gwyneth Paltrow looked like a foxy fashion superhero in her caped Tom Ford gown. Let's call her Captain Cool Minimalist, shall we? Paltrow played off the gown's austerity with a diamond-encrusted cuff and sleek locks.
2)Angelina Jolie in Ateller Versace
When Angelina Jolie does drama, she does it dark. The actress-turned-überserious-director was back in black for Oscars evening, serving up some well-toned leg in luxurious black Atelier Versace slit to there. We can't help but love Jolie's aggressively vampish pose, either.
1)Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli
Emma Stone looked ultra-feminine in her fuchsia Giambattista Valli dress, even if it kicked off some major deja vú for anyone who remembers the crimson Balenciaga gown Nicole Kidman wore to the 2007 Oscars. Unfortunately, Emma is not quite as seasoned at carrying off high drama as is Nicole.
